Painting Now: Five Contemporary Artists at the Tate Britain

12 November 2013 - 09 February 2014
A new exhibition at the Tate Britain profiles five contemporary British artists who are rising stars in the art world.

The painting-based exhibition looks at five artists who are currently
conducting innovative experiments within the medium. The show’s focus
centres on the works of Tomma Abts, Gillian Carnegie, Simon Ling, Lucy
McKenzie and Catherine Story, each of whom has crafted a distinctive
approach to painting. In their creative undertakings, though, the five
are unified in their attempts to destroy the barriers of traditional
painting and breathe new life into the medium. From complex and abstract
works to academic figurative paintings and pieces that take inspiration
from craft, the artists’ canvases are visually engaging and
conceptually progressive.
