Hiroshi Sugimoto: Past Tense

04 February 2014 - 08 June 2014
An exciting new retrospective of Japanese photographer Hiroshi Sugimoto’s work will arrive at the Getty Center from February 2014.

This innovative exhibition is designed and arranged by the artist himself to examine three past series of his work: habitat dioramas, wax portraiture, and early photographic negatives. The common thread between all three is that they each present items of historical and cultural significance from a number of museum collections, thus comprising meditations on a distant and separated past. This retrospective study considers not only Sugimoto’s relationship with his past work and its developmental chronology, but also the inextricable relationship between past and present that the medium itself necessarily dictates.
