Expressionism in Germany and France: From Van Gogh to Kandinsky at LACMA

08 June 2014 - 14 September 2014

LACMA’s new exhibition will examine Expressionism from a new angle: as an international style, rather than a distinctly German movement.

The first museum exhibition to approach the movement from this perspective, LACMA’s new show will comprise 90 paintings and 45 works on paper from a diverse array of artists. Here, Cézanne, Van Gogh, Matisse, Kandinsky, Kirchner and more (over 40 different artists, hailing from various countries, will be represented) are all grouped under the Expressionist heading, with the exhibition’s main focus resting on these international artistic dialogues. Supported by a number of high-profile loans, the show will provide an in-depth exploration into this avant-garde, 20th century style.
