History of The Plaza Athénée

1913

The Plaza Athenee opened, just a short walk from the Champs Elysées Theatre, at N° 25 of the avenue Montaigne. It quite naturally became the favourite meeting place for the great musicians, composers and performers alike.

1917

Margaretha Zelle Mac Leod more known under the name of Mata Hari stayed at the Plaza Athénée

1920

Henri Ford and his son Edsel during the 20’s who stayed at the Plaza Athénée.

1921

The Roaring Twenties began with the post-war period and the 20’s. Paris became a true center of attraction. History, politics, industry and art attracted customers from all over the world. The hotel’s surface area was doubled with the construction of large apartments, a Courtyard and meeting rooms Régence and Marie-Antoinette, thanks to the architect Jules Lefevre. The Hotel sprawls from the n°21 to the n° 27 of the Avenue Montaigne.

The Relais Plaza restaurant, conceived by Constant Lefranc, architect and interior designer, opened that same year

1938

1947

Christian Dior set up his shop on Avenue Montaigne to be close to the Plaza Athénée. This started a whole new era. The Avenue Montaigne became the avenue of Haute Couture and the Plaza Athénée was the luxury hotel for fashion and art. From Grace Kelly to Gary Cooper, and from Jackie Kennedy to the Ford family, the Plaza Athénée is it. It’s the must!

1949

Lee Reemick, famous American actress, at the Plaza Athénée with the young groom Pierre Hunou who left the hotel in 2007.

1959

The Princess Grace de Monaco in October 1959, in front of the Hotel.

1962

Georges Marin became Hotel Manager. He had already managed the Hôtel Royal d’Evian and the Dorchester in London. He decided upon a great plan of renovations, and established that renovations have to be made continuously and constantly.

1971

Liz Taylor and Richard Burton stayed more than six month in the Royal Suite

1973

Clint Eastwood in 1973 in front of the Plaza Athénée

1978

Roger Moore and Tony Curtis. Several episodes of « The Persuaders » were filmed at the Plaza Athénée.

1980

The English Bar of the Plaza Athénée before refurbishement.

1982

Franco Cozzo, with Charles Aznavour and Sammy Davis Junior at the English Bar.

1997

After a year under the Forte group’s control by Granada, His Royal Highness Prince Jefri Bolkiah of Brunei Sultanate became the owner of the Plaza Athénée.

This year, Alain Ducasse came at the Plaza Athénée. He kept his 3 Michelin Stars since 2001.

The Bar of the Plaza Athénée has been entirely redecorated by Patrick Jouin. It becomes one of the trendiest places of the French capital.

2004

The episodes « American girl in Paris 1 & 2 » of the famous show Sex and the City have been filmed at the Plaza Athénée.

The Royal Suite opens its doors. With its 450sqm, four bedrooms, four bathrooms, with two steambaths and one jacuzzi, three living rooms and one dining room for 12 persons, it is the biggest suite in Paris.

2006

The creation of the Terrace Montaigne. A case of greenery set in the middle of the fashion avenue.

2007

First year of our ice skating rink which is now a tradition each year for the festive season

2008

The Plaza Athénée and Christian Dior, with a shared address on the prestigious Avenue Montaigne and also common values of elegance, supreme luxury and refinement, set up the Dior Institut at the Plaza Athénée.

2009

A new Eiffel Suite is born with a spectacular view on the iron lady

2011

The Plaza Athénée entirely decorated and accessorised a Barbie room for girls and Hotwheels room for boys only dedicated to children.
