Les Arts Décoratifs: La Mécanique des Dessous: une histoire indiscrète de la silhouette

25 November 2013
This new exhibition, hosted in Paris’ fashion, textile and decorative arts museum, will focus on the history and ever-changing silhouette of clothing through the lens of influential designers.

Les Arts Décoratifs museum depicts the journey that both male and female silhouettes have undergone in fashion, from the 14th Century right up to the modern day. As societal roles began to change, the hoop, the corset and men’s waist belts were streamlined by the world’s first couturiers: Paul Poiret and Madeleine Vionnet. Designers contemporary to each period and their significant influence on societal and gender based positions are demonstrated, from the invention of the bra to the women’s liberation movement and finally a Renaissance of corsets revived by Jean Paul Gaultier and Vivienne Westwood.
