Joséphine at the Musée du Luxembourg

12 March 2014 - 29 June 2014
In honour of the 200th anniversary of her death, Josephine de Beauharnais will be celebrated in a new exhibition at the Musée du Luxembourg.

Best remembered today as the wife of Napoleon I and the first Empress of France, Joséphine nevertheless has a fascinating history of her own. Born in Martinique and of Creole origins, Joséphine met Napoleon after her first husband was guillotined during the French Revolution; their relationship, which began as a clandestine romance, is the stuff of legend thanks to Napoleon’s prolific love letters. Beyond her marriages, though, this exhibition seeks to fully explore Joséphine’s story, from her sovereignty and love of art to her post-divorce years.
