The world’s longest running carnival, the Carnevale Ambrosiano, held in Milan, is a riot of colour and street celebrations.
Based on the Milanese liturgical calendar, Carnevale Ambrosiano lasts for a stretch of five days, as Lent begins four days later than in the Roman calendar. The result is a marathon of celebrations including street festivities and performances, traditional parades and floats and a number of other family-friendly events, from games to tram rides. Masquerades are another traditional aspect of Milan’s carnival celebrations, with many participants dressing up as the Milanese character Meneghino. Every year, Carnevale concludes on the Saturday after Ash Wednesday with a traditional procession that leads revellers to the Duomo.
