Tristan Und Isolde at the Opéra Bastille
08 April 2014 - 04 May 2014
Written while taking a break from composing his epic Ring Cycle, Wagner’s tragic and romantic Tristan Und Isolde will appear at the Opéra Bastille this spring.
Written in 1859, the three-act opera is based on the medieval Tristan and Iseult legend. The tragic story sees Tristan and Isolde fall in love after drinking an enchanted potion prepared by Isolde’s servant; however, their romance is not to be, as Isolde has been promised in marriage to Tristan’s uncle. This production, directed by Philippe Jordan, is certain to be visually striking: famed video artist Bill Viola has assisted in the staging of the work. Tenor Robert Dean Smith will star in the role of Tristan, while Isolde will be played by soprano Violeta Urmana.
