La Clemenza di Tito

27 November 2013 - 23 December 2013
The Opera National de Paris will stage La Clemenza di Tito
at the Palais Garnier, the last of Mozart’s operas.

Written in just three months prior to the composer’s death,
La Clemenza di Tito – a two-act opera seria, which links a series of arias with
a recitative – is often seen as a testament to Mozart’s aesthetic and humanist
concerns. The work tells the dramatic story of Roman Emperor Titus, whose rule
is threatened by a group of plotters who seek power for themselves. The opera’s
theme centres on the virtue of mercy, which Titus later bestows upon those who
would betray him. These performances see the opera return to the Palais Garnier
for the first time since 2006; Thomas Netopil will direct the lauded Willy
Decker production.
