Bob Mizer & Tom of Finland
02 November 2013 - 26 January 2014
MOCA Pacific Design Center is presenting the first major American exhibition dedicated to the work and collaborations of 20th-century erotic artists Bob Mizer and Tom of Finland.
Artists Touko Laaksonen (known more commonly by his artistic moniker, Tom of Finland) and American Bob Mizer produced some of the most celebrated depictions of gay society from the 1940s onwards, paving the way for a budding post-war gay culture. Presented in partnership with the Bob Mizer Foundation and the Tom of Finland Foundation, this new display at the MOCA features Laaksonen’s explicit collages and drawings, together with films and seldom-seen photograph catalogue boards by Mizer. An extensive collection of Mizer’s magazine Physique Pictorial – which published many of Laaksonen’s pieces – will also be on display.
