Within the extraordinary surroundings of the basilica, a
Late Renaissance masterwork that is one of the world’s largest churches, the
Pope leads Christmas Eve services each year. Tickets are predictably difficult
to secure, but even those who are not able to take in the service from within
the church itself can still gather with legions of devotees in the Piazza San
Pietro to witness the Mass from a number of large screens. At noon on Christmas
Day, meanwhile, the Pope gives the traditional ‘Urbi et Orbi’ address to the
City of Rome from the central loggia of St. Peter’s.
