An Artistic Affair: Stanley Spencer and Daphne Charlton


The affair between artist Stanley Spencer and the married Daphne Charlton lasted from 1939 and 1941 and proved to be a particularly fruitful period for the artist. Thanks to loans from private collections, trusts and the Tate, An Artistic Affair promises to be a full and vibrant look at the interlude and the woman who inspired it.

The Power of Flowers in The Savill Garden


Aptly-named, The Power of Flowers is a family-friendly season of flower-centric activities at The Savill Garden, found within Windsor Great Park. Mini horticulturalists can explore and learn about the Garden’s flora and fauna, make something colourful at the Creation Station, have their face painted and watch puppet performances.

Autumn Afternoon Racing


This autumn, get your hearts pounding watching the racing at Royal Windsor Racecourse. On select afternoons throughout the season, the gates and restaurants at the Racecourse open hours before the start bell goes off; perfect time an atmospheric drink in the lauded surrounds or a meal with the family. Happily, under-18s attend for free when accompanied by an adult.

RHS Wisley Flower Show


The world-class garden RHS Wisley provides a stunning backdrop for the annual Flower Show. Flower fans and garden enthusiasts come from around the country to enjoy the extravagant displays, buy buds from RHS Chelsea and Hampton Court Palace Flower Show medal winners and nurseries, and seek advice and inspiration from the specialists in attendance.

Windsor Autumn Festival


Music and food, open houses and exhibitions; this year’s Windsor Autumn Festival is set to host a huge number of calendar-worthy events. There will be a private dining experience at Heston Blumenthal’s The Hind’s Head, poet Wendy Cope will make an appearance in the Literary Series, and 16-year-old wunderkind violinist will be taking a starring role in the Philharmonia performance at the Waterloo Chamber, to name but a few highlights.

Windsor Fringe


The second oldest Fringe in the country, Windsor Fringe has been around since 1969, supporting and celebrating the arts in all its guises from music and film to dance and drama. The Kenneth Branagh Award, now in its 14th year, is a particular draw, promising audiences the best of up-and-coming new writing, with the finalists’ one-act plays being performed for the public and a panel of expert judges during the festival.

Autumn Racing Weekend & Ascot Beer Festival


Over 280 real ales, perries and ciders will be on offer during the two-day-long Beer Festival, which runs alongside a weekend of stellar flat racing at Ascot Racecourse. The Totescoop6 Challenge Cup, with a seven-furlong handicap at £180,000, returns, as does the Ascot Bier Haus, lending the proceedings some high-class Oktoberfest flair. While it might be worth placing bets before indulging, all told, it proves that real ale and racing is a perfect pairing.

Wild Food Walks


If you love truffles, you’re in luck. Learn to forage for seasonal delights such as those on one of the Wild Food Walks taking place through the autumn with guides from Petersham Nurseries. Even with the light lunch provided, the Walks are sure to fire up your hunger for hedgerow berries and native woodland mushrooms, sparking a new passion for the British countryside.

QIPCO British Champions Day


One of the most hotly anticipated racing events of the year, the QIPCO British Champions Day is the sensational finale to the British Flat racing season. This year’s purse is a jaw-dropping £4.26 million, with jockeys and horses from around the world vying for the chance to win. In addition to the races, the Ascot Racecourse has a massive Kids Zone with its own mini Jockey School that’s sure to entertain.

Laplandᵁᴷ family day out
