Art Deco design with Moinard Bétaille
June 23, 2021
The perfect partnership
Bruno Moinard began collaborating with designer Claire Bétaille in 2007. Together they formed a successful partnership, giving them the chance to bounce ideas around with someone with the same design ideals and to see every project as a unique challenge. Their work always takes them on a journey of evolution, resulting in truly spectacular results.
Tell us about your relationship with Hôtel Plaza Athénée
We first worked with the hotel back in 2011, after winning a competition to be one of the design companies for the hotel’s restoration. We weren’t considered the favourites to win as we were thought to be ‘too modern’, but our passion for the project won through.
What makes the hotel so special?
Like the hotel, our offices are located on avenue Montaigne so we’re just a short walk away. When we started on the project, we would go there every day to really understand the property. It soon became clear what a unique place it is with a strong identity. By appreciating what made it special, we decided our mission would be to change everything without appearing to change anything!
What inspires you at The Plaza?
There are so many things but what really stands out is the sense of home and history that it offers its guests. The hotel provides an elegant way of life that’s very different from other Parisian palace hotels. It’s a place of excellence, where the warm welcome and attention to detail are always exceptional, leaving you feeling cossetted from the outside world. One of our favourite places is La Cour Jardin, it’s like finding a secret garden in the heart of the city.
What were your inspirations for this latest project?
We were given the Art Deco theme and chose to create a renewed and audacious vision of this era. Many of these rooms and suites are located right under the roof so the size and shape of these spaces distinguishes them from the classic, high-ceilinged lower floors. The skylights and small balconies offer the spirit of a sophisticated Parisian pied à terre, with stylish custom-made furniture creating a wonderfully homely feel.
Tell us more about the Signature Duplex Suite?
This unique suite celebrates the more avant-garde Art Deco style and plays with light through the use of pleated linen blinds, mirrors, woodwork and asymmetrical patterns. We’ve also included a few signature red flourishes for which Hôtel Plaza Athénée is known. Having discovered the interior, guests are then treated to an impressive terrace, nestled between the Parisian rooftops.
Is there a link between this project and your previous work?
Yes, throughout the project we’ve kept in mind the importance of the hotel’s beautiful light, the platinum colour chandeliers and those important red touches. Although the hotel has very different areas, we like to feel there’s a common thread holding them together so that they all work as one inviting place.
Tell us about the craftsmen you chose for this project
Like the team at the hotel who makes everything so special for its guests, we work with the finest craftsmen who are all masters of their art. When we discuss ideas together and form a plan it’s like alchemy, a real meeting of minds to create something extraordinary. For example, we have worked with a French master pleat-maker, Pietro Seminelli, who has transformed the blinds into true works of art. Look out for other details such as beautifully brushed wood, precious lacquers and hand-hammered metals.
