Eton College’s museums and collections
One of England’s most reputable educational institutions, Eton College is also home to a rich collection of archives, manuscripts, artefacts and rare books, many of which professors use while teaching. Visitors are welcome to explore its museums, which house windows painted by the stained-glass artist John Piper, a page from a draft of Charles Darwin’s On the Origin of Species and a perfect copy of the Gutenberg Bible, an early example of a printed book.

Castle Fine Art
This gallery has nurtured new talent since 1995, showcasing contemporary limited-edition works and bespoke pieces, which come with hand-signed certificates by emerging artists. You can also browse works by household names; look out for photographs by the former World Cup champion Pelé, sketches by the Scottish comedian and actor Billy Connelly, and charcoal, oil and spray paint portraits by The Rolling Stones’ guitarist Ronnie Wood. The gallery also hosts regular events where you can mingle with artists.

The Lightbox
Recognised for its sustainable energy practices, this landmark building features overlapping aluminium panels in shades of gold and silver. Designed in 2007 by Marks Barfield Architects – the duo behind the London Eye and Kew Gardens’ treetop walkway – The Lightbox features three galleries alongside exhibitions, talks, tours and workshops. Visit the Ingram Collection to view works by modern British artists including Edward Burra and Lynn Chadwick and allow time to take in the Joan Hurst Collection’s striking modern sculptures such as Elisabeth Frink’s ‘Horse and Rider,’ bronze.

Stanley Spencer Gallery
This gallery in Cookham, a 30-minute drive from Coworth Park, is named after the eponymous local artist, whose paintings have been exhibited at Tate Britain and the Royal Academy in London. Housed in the former Wesleyan Chapel where Stanley used to worship, the gallery opened in 1962, and now welcomes around 15,000 visitors each year. Delight in Nature: Stanley Spencer’s World, which runs until October 30, 2022, celebrates the artist’s favourite works – while he’s known for his landscapes, his passion was to paint pieces inspired by the natural world.

South Hill Park
Formerly a stately home, the Grade II-listed South Hill Park celebrates all forms of creative expression, bringing together theatre, cinema and art. Throughout the year, the art centre hosts events, film screenings and theatre performances in its galleries, studios, terraces and landscaped gardens. Its recent exhibition, Sense of Space, displayed a collection of works by the Reading Guild of Artists, which reflected upon our surroundings in a post-pandemic world.
