Lionel Richie exhibition at BAR 45

July 04, 2016

As the hotel with art at its heart, at 45 Park Lane we’re particularly excited by our latest art exhibition, STILL – a series of previously unseen photos of Lionel Richie, chronicling the GRAMMY award-winning superstar’s career to date.

All the images are by US photographer Alan Silfen, who has worked closely with Lionel Richie for many years. Silfen shows the close relationship he’s experienced with Lionel from the 1980s to the present day, depicting iconic moments such as Lionel’s 2015 Glastonbury performance, as well as candid shots with Princess Diana, Frank Sinatra, Tina Turner and LL Cool J. The exhibition runs until July 29.

To celebrate STILL’s launch, a private party was hosted by Lionel and Silfen at BAR 45 on July 5. Guests drank All Night Long, a new champagne cocktail designed by head bartender Maurizio Palermo, in honour of Lionel Richie and based on his favourite ingredients. The cocktail is available at BAR 45 during the exhibition, so you can try it for yourself. Guests at the private party included Marc Quinn, Roy Ackerman and Meredith Ostrom.

Talking about the exhibition Lionel said, “I’ve known Al for many years and he has become part of the family. He’s an amazing artist as well as a friend. It’s great to see all of the photographs displayed together and the experiences we’ve shared. What’s unique about this exhibition has been the selection process – revisiting the memories, the good times and stories from each special moment, as well as being able to rework some of the photos especially for this.”

Silfen first began photographing The Commodores at the age of 17, after pursuing the band’s manager and following them on tour until he eventually became part of the touring crew. From here Silfen grew closer to Lionel with whom he would go on to travel the world.

Silfen says, “These photographs are really personal to me – I have been something of a friendly voyeur in Lionel’s life.  The Glastonbury photo is one of my favourites – the crowd went wild, it was the biggest crowd the Pyramid ever saw.  Later that night we were having a celebratory meal at CUT at 45 Park Lane when we heard The Definitive Collection had gone to number one in the UK.”

General manager John Scanlon adds, “Alan Silfen’s photography charting Lionel Richie’s career is an exceptional addition to BAR 45’s rolling art programme.  We’re extremely proud that 45 Park Lane has been chosen as the first place to exhibit STILL.”

For anyone new to 45 Park Lane, you’re in for an artist feast. On permanent display are all 16 of Damien Hirst’s limited-edition Diamond Dust Psalms line at CUT at 45 Park Lane, our modern American steak restaurant. There are also works of art dotted around the hotel from artists including Sir Peter Blake and Christian Furr. As well as a constantly changing programme of exhibitions as part of our dedication to art, we offer access to the hotel artists via studio visits, art lessons and exclusive gallery and exhibition tours. Drop by BAR 45 for drinks and see for yourself.

STILL is on display until July 29.
