6 of Santa Monica’s best restaurants

April 29, 2022

A short drive from Beverly Hills, Santa Monica epitomises the easy-going Californian lifestyle, with a reputation for its world-class dining scene. From gourmet dinners to a casual bite before heading to the beach, here are some of our favourite eateries.

Cassia

This neighbourhood restaurant has a stunning Art Deco design and some of the best food in the city. The perfect place to bring a group of friends and share a little of everything on the menu, because you won’t want to miss a single dish. We recommend the spicy wontons and whole grilled sea bass.

Fia

An oasis in the heart of Santa Monica, Fia is the perfect spot if you’re hoping to impress someone special. The space was designed by Matthew Winter of M. Winter Design and is utterly romantic. Try the cavatelli with truffles and the Moulin Rouge cocktail made with gin, fresh lemon, raspberry, Select Rouge and cacao.

Elephante

If you’re looking to enjoy views of the coast while sipping delicious cocktails, this is your place. The rooftop restaurant and bar is inspired by Pantelleria, an island that sits between the coast of Italy and Tunisia. The menu is light coastal Italian and the three bars offer a variety of fun, approachable cocktails inspired by the flavours of Italy. Their most popular cocktail is the Violet Curtain, made with vodka, hibiscus, grapefruit aperitif and cucumber.

Bay Cities Italian Deli

Home to some of the best sandwiches in all of Los Angeles, this is the perfect spot to grab a quick bite and head to the beach. The must-try sandwich is The Godmother, made with salami, Prosciutto, mortadella, capicola ham and provolone. Grab a few side dishes or salads on your way out – they have everything from marinated veggies to spaghetti and meatballs.

Birdie G’s

Part of the Rustic Canyon restaurant group, this is one of the most popular restaurants in Santa Monica. The menu is market-driven New American food with Eastern European flourishes. Start with the cast-iron cornbread, move to the wood-grilled chicken and finish with the world-famous rose petal pie for dessert.

The perfect breakfast or brunch spot, the menu here is full of comfort food like cinnamon rolls, pancakes, fried egg sandwiches and more. Everything is made on-site and sourced locally. They also have freshly-baked pastries, desserts, breads, sandwiches and salads available daily – pick a little of everything and take it to the beach to relax under the sun.
