From scenic national parks to tropical botanical gardens and beautiful beaches, there are plenty of ways to make the most of the great American outdoors. Let us remind you of just some of our favourite places to get away from it all and enjoy the sunny climate and strong fitness culture.
The Central Garden at the Getty Center
A living work of art at the Getty Center, the Central Garden takes the artistic ethos of the museum outside. The 134,000-square-foot space features several picturesque specialty gardens and water features centred around a pool, upon which floats a maze of green azaleas. New plants and gardens are constantly added, so there’s something new to see on every visit.

El Porto
El Porto is a surfers’ mecca. The protected beach attracts surfers from near and far with its consistently large waves, caused by a natural underwater canyon. Local surf schools such as Campsurf offer private and group lessons for beginners and intermediate surfers, while a selection of other local companies offer board rental and other water-based sports such as stand up paddle boarding.

Long Beach
Sailing enthusiasts shouldn’t leave LA without visiting Long Beach. With a number of clubs to choose from (Long Beach Yacht Club and Shoreline Yacht Club, to name but a few), sailors are spoilt for choice. Whether you’re interested in boat rental, sailing lessons or sports such as jet skiing and kayaking, you can find it all in Long Beach.

Santa Monica
The coastal town of Santa Monica is not only beautiful, but it’s also full of beautiful (fitness-obsessed) people. Head to the beach at any time of day to see runners, rollerbladers and cyclists speeding along the promenade, and weights enthusiasts working out at the open-air gyms on the beachfront, like the legendary Muscle Beach. Join in with the locals with an early morning workout.

Stone Canyon Overlook
Famed for its unparalleled panoramas of the Santa Monica Mountains, this short walking trail with its spectacular viewpoint has been a fixture for visitors and locals since it opened in 1994. Although the vistas are beautiful on any given day, when the weather is particularly fine, visitors can see out to the Pacific Ocean and Catalina Island.

Franklin Canyon Park
Franklin Canyon Park sprawls over 605 acres between the San Fernando Valley and Beverly Hills. It is replete with sprawling oak woodland, rolling grasslands, a three-acre lake and over five miles of hiking trails – ideal for casual strollers, nature enthusiasts or more serious runners.

The Huntington
Part-library, part-art gallery, part-botanical gardens, The Huntington is a highlight for culture and nature lovers. After browsing the vast collection of books and artworks on display, head outside and explore the gardens, within which grow some 15,000 plant varieties. Don’t miss the stunning Frances and Sidney Brody California Garden, the striking Japanese Garden, and the Desert Garden, featuring 5,000 desert plant species.

Los Angeles County Arboretum & Botanic Garden
Located in the heart of Rancho Santa Anita, the 127-acre Los Angeles County Arboretum & Botanic Garden unites history and nature. It’s home to several historic structures from Native America and the late 19th century, and several beautiful conservation gardens filled with plants, herbs, roses, aquatic features and tropical greenhouses. The space also hosts a programme of regular events, from garden yoga to art workshops.

Amir’s Garden
Griffith Park may be best known as the home of the Griffith Observatory and the Hollywood sign, but look a little closer and you’ll discover intimate spaces such as Amir’s Garden. The lesser-known ornamental garden is run by volunteers and is dedicated to the late gardener Amir Dialameh. Used by hikers seeking a shady spot to rest, the tranquil space affords beautiful views of the valley.
