French fancies

West Hollywood’s ‘Little Door’ bistro is a beautiful “Parisian-style brasserie with one of the most romantic candlelit patios in the city” according to Hotel Bel-Air’s chief concierge Steve Sorg. Hidden behind the most unassuming of wooden doors, this classic bistro serves superb farm-to-table French food. The divine patio outside is a beautiful choice for a warm Californian night; an unexpected secret paradise with pretty white-clothed tables and delicate vine-covered courtyard walls. If you can secure one of these coveted tables, pair an impressive French-focused wine list with the house favourite’s herb-crusted rack of lamb.

A-list Italian

The wrap-around patio of this Beverly Hills trattoria is celebrated both for its flavours and its famous clientele. Il Pastaio is the neighbourhood icon that’s perennially popular, with sidewalk seating that’s some of the most sought-after in LA. Try perfectly-executed regional dishes that bring the mainland of Italy straight to the palm-fringed West Coast – the extensive pasta menu would make any nonna proud. For Italian fare that’s less packed with paparazzi, head to Cecconi’s Hollywood outpost on the corner of Melrose Avenue. The walled outdoor patio is a refreshing respite from the bustle of the city.

Asian fusion

Head into the heart of Beverly Hills for this clever flagship of celebrated chef Helene An. Recommended by Steve Sorg as the “crown jewel of Vietnamese cuisine in Los Angeles”, this gorgeous restaurant is known for its walk-on water floors and includes a beautiful section of outdoor seating on its sleek pavement patio on Bedford Drive. Soak up the laid-back city vibes as you dine on a delicious fusion menu that comes with a fun side order of playful theatrical touches. Try signature dishes like the garlic noodles or opt for newer creations, such as the tuna cigars with tobiko caviar ‘ash’ and a hit of hickory-infused smoke.

SoCal glamour

Stay a little closer to home and book a glamorous Sunday brunch at one of the prettiest patios in Los Angeles. Home of the McCarthy Salad, the outdoor terrace of the Polo Lounge is nothing short of picture-perfect. The terracotta alcoves, beautifully framed by bougainvillea and vibrant greenery, stand out against the white wrought-iron furniture at this striking outdoor setting, which is equally attractive at night when illuminated by twinkling lights and candles.

There’s a similarly atmospheric feel to the sprawling outdoor dining room at Hotel Bel-Air’s Wolfgang Puck restaurant. The private little seating booths are a perfect date-night destination, where farm-fresh local dishes are served in a wonderfully intimate garden setting. Pick a table with views over the famous Swan Lake to really impress.

Steakhouse specialties

Baltaire is Brentwood’s sleek and stylish steakhouse, which has one of the best al fresco spots for a sun-soaked LA lunch. The wood and leather details of the contemporary interior are just as lovely when you head through the floor-to-ceiling doors to the unpretentious terrace outside. Sweet-smelling citrus trees add a touch of the tropics to the chilled-out lounge area, and the outdoor fireplace and retractable roof canopy ensure the al fresco option here is always perfect, whatever the weather. On the menu you’ll find high grade steaks in prime position, complemented by delicious seafood options and a decadent raw bar.

Aegean simplicity

A restaurant of choice for the Hollywood elite, Avra is the Golden Triangle’s cool and classic take on simple Greek cuisine. Towering low-lit lemon trees bring a calming character indoors, while stone-washed walls and terracotta-potted greenery transform the outdoor sidewalk into a foliage-fringed city escape. The sleek island vibes of the outdoor terrace are the perfect accompaniment to the simple flavours of the fish-focussed Greek menu. Charcoal-kissed seafood is flown in fresh from the Med everyday – and there’s even a ‘pick your own’ fish display so you can bag the best-looking lobster and local sea bream all for yourself.
