Mirko Cattini’s love of Rome
August 01, 2022

Where in Italy are you originally from?
I was born near Lake Como, in the north of Italy. Its sought-after location at the foot of the Alps is renowned for its outstanding scenery. Dotted around the lake are wonderfully picturesque little towns and majestic villas, making it a popular setting for films and music videos.
How is life in Rome?
It’s been my dream to work in Rome and now I’m here it surprises and delights me on a daily basis. It feels like every turn I make brings fresh insights into the city’s rich history and culture, and I find that truly awe-inspiring. After almost two decades of working outside of Italy, I thought it might be difficult to adjust but the moment I returned everything felt right. Now, it truly feels like home.
What’s your favourite Roman landmark?
Top of my list of favourites is ‘Altare della Patria’, also known as the Vittoriano National Monument. For me, it encapsulates the majesty of Rome and the finest Italian craftsmanship. Built to honour Victor Emmanuel II, the first king of unified Italy, it stands in the middle of ancient Rome, between Piazza Venezia and Capitoline Hill. It’s on the route of my morning run so I always make a point of stopping there to catch my breath and admire it.

What appeals to you most about living in Rome?
I’m a foodie, passionate about creativity on a plate, and the food here in Rome is excellent. There are plenty of time-honoured dishes such as cacio e pepe and coda alla vaccinara but the culinary scene has also embraced innovation. Now there’s a long list of restaurants and trattorias serving modern, healthy cuisine and it’s just as tasty.
What’s your ideal day off?
When I am not working, I like spending my days outdoors with my wife, Rica. We usually start with a relaxing breakfast, either at home or in a local café. As we are new to the city, we love walking around Rome and exploring new places. It’s also a great way to work up an appetite for a hearty local dish.
What’s the best advice you’ve been given?
Don’t be afraid to make mistakes, just make sure that you learn from them. By recognising our mistakes, we can embrace opportunities and become better in all aspects of our lives.
What’s your favourite film?
My favourite films are Cinema Paradiso by Giuseppe Tornatore and the 1983 Scarface, starring Al Pacino.
