Red, the Plaza Athénée’s emblematic colour, is also going green!
The Hotel Plaza Athénée invests in sustainable development in economic, social and environmental areas. It’s not only a commitment; we are undertaking real actions. New: Our sponsorship with Versailles Palace Following on from the “10,000 Trees for Versailles” project which replaced all the trees blown down by the 1999 storm, The Versailles Palace is now offering companies and private individuals the chance to sponsor various aspects of its gardens e.g. the planting of lime trees, the restoration of antique benches, the installation of new benches or the restoration of its statues.
The prestige and international fame shared by the Plaza Athénée and the Palace of Versailles have encouraged them to work together. As one of its patronage actions, the Plaza Athénée has paid for the restoration of a 17th century marble bench at the “Petit Trianon”, the installation of a new bench in the castle’s main courtyard and the planting of 15 lime trees at the Etoile Royale in the palace grounds. In 2013, the hotel decided to mark its hundredth anniversary by again supporting the Versailles estate. This time, he was involved in the planting of 100 new trees along the “Allée Royale” in Marly Park.
Doing so, Hotel Plaza Athénée is not only taking part in the environmental regeneration of this prestigious location but is also helping to save global heritage. The sustainable environment approach is an integral part of an objective shared by all the hotels in the Dorchester Collection.
In fact, The Dorchester in London is also involved in replanting trees, in Hyde Park where 80 trees will be planted over the next five years. The carbon audit conducted for the first time in 2010 will be repeated every four years to measure the impact of the hotel’s economic activity on our greenhouse gas emissions. It highlights the hotel’s consumption in areas such as energy, transport, purchases etc. The aim of the audit is to introduce a strategy to reduce emissions, evaluated in terms of CO2 equivalent tonnes.
On a daily basis, eco-management means switching electronic devices to standby or using computers instead of paper. Waste management allows Plaza Athénée to sort and recycle many products like aluminium cans, light bulbs etc. The hotel’s PR Department is also involved in this project, adding a touch of green to some of the events.
One example of this was Alain Ducasse’s seasonal markets held in the Plaza Athénée’s Courtyard Garden in 2009 and 2010. Other departments also make their own contribution. Our restaurants use seasonal products in the dishes they prepare for guests, retail outlets offer a la carte organic food. Versailles Palace and Hôtel Plaza Athénée have concluded a patronage concerning exclusive vegetables production, in respect with traditional and sustainable production methods. This project is carried out by Alain Baraton, Chief Gardener in the “Petit Trianon” gardens. Chef Alain Ducasse cooks these locally produced vegetables with a “terroir” tradition in his restaurant “Alain Ducasse au Plaza Athénée”.
Over the past three years, the Plaza Athénée has also set up a sustainable development unit in-house. Each department delegates one person to the unit and it organises actions aimed at increasing social responsibility. One result is a partnership with the Trousseau children’s hospital in Paris. Twice a year, generally for Christmas and Easter, the unit organises entertainment to brighten up the children’s day in the hospital. In February 2014, a team of painters and volunteers from Plaza Athénée have also repainted La Roche Guyon’s hospital game room.
