Established in 2010, the annual Dorchester Collection Fashion Prize was created to discover emerging fashion talent and build on Dorchester Collection’s own established fashion heritage. It is the first award of its kind developed by a luxury hotel company. Huishan Zhang is the winner of the 2013 Dorchester Collection Fashion Prize.
Each year, one gifted fashion designer of ready-to-wear or premium accessories is awarded the prize, which for 2013 has a prize value of £25,000 to them help establish their brand, plus a stay at a Dorchester Collection hotel. The judging criterion is based on finding the designer who best demonstrates original aesthetic flair, combined with capability for future critical distinction and commercial success. The winner’s work must also evoke the spirit of Dorchester Collection’s iconic hotels and, therefore, project a sense of individuality, luxury, style and craftsmanship.
The esteemed panel of judges evolves year to year and has included world renowned and critically-acclaimed members of the fashion elite including Derek Blasberg, Manolo Blahnik, Daphne Guinness, Stephen Jones, Kenzo Takada, Marchesa’s Georgina Chapman and Keren Craig, Francisco Costa, Rupert Sanderson and Elizabeth Saltzman.
The Dorchester Collection Fashion Prize continues to build momentum and has already highlighted the design talent and shaped the careers of the 2010 winner Thomas Tait and 2011 winner Anndra Neen. From the interest and publicity already received, it looks like the same will soon be said of Augustin Teboul, the 2012 winner.
Each year short listed finalists take part in a glamorous catwalk event hosted at one of the Dorchester Collection hotels, at which the winner is announced. The 2013 Dorchester Collection Fashion Prize was held in the Ballroom of The Dorchester in London on 29 October.
