OUR PEOPLE

Ben Bushell

Nationality: British

University: University College Birmingham

Current position: PA to Global Director, Dorchester Collection Academy

Why did you decide to join a management in training programme such as the Ultimate Leader Programme?

I felt that I needed to start my career with a role that complimented my degree but also pushed my boundaries from what I had already done. A management training programme would do this but it would also give me an amazing insight into a business because of the nature of the rotations.

Why did you choose to work at Dorchester Collection?

When I was looking for my management training programme I had just finished university and short term travel break. I had decided that I needed my training to be somewhere remarkable. Somewhere when I could really push myself and put into practice the knowledge gained throughout my degree. Seeing that Dorchester Collection had the Ultimate Leaders Programme I had my heart set on the role from the moment I found it and knew I had to work at The Dorchester.

What do you enjoy about your role and the programme?

I really enjoy the variety of tasks I am assigned each day. From events to project management, organising to problem solving, no day is the same and that keeps the role engaging and exciting.
The programme was such a welcoming team of graduate students and leaders that I felt at home from the moment I started at The Dorchester. Having such a great team to work with makes even the toughest days the most rewarding ones.

What skill have you acquired during the programme that you think will be valuable for your entire career?

The ability to step into the unknown and out of my comfort zone on a regular basis. This has made me incredibly adaptable and open to change, but also has given me the skill where I can be given something new and not be afraid to get stuck in straight away.

Could you please tell me about your best memory during the programme?

We hosted a multimillion pound wedding at the hotel while I was in my housekeeping rotation. It was quite possibly the most exciting weekend of my life with celebrity A-lister’s walking the corridors of the rooms I was in charge of. Liaising with the external talent management team, internal events team and housekeeping teams to ensure everything I was in control of was running smoothly. It was exhausting and I had only been in the role for a couple of months but it is a memory I will never forget.

What position do you aspire to secure at the end of the programme? If you have finished the programme, what position did you secure at the end of programme and what do you enjoy about it?

At the end of my programme I moved back into housekeeping and took on the role of Linen Room Manager. This, again was a new challenge and something very exciting. As this was maternity cover, after a few months I move the Dorchester Collection Corporate office where I support the Global Director in a new venture, Dorchester Collection Academy.
This role is dramatically different to what I was used to but all my experience in the hotel really helped to me to succeed in this position. I love the variation of tasks I undertake and different challenges I face on a daily basis. It’s all about organising, planning and problem solving and I love that quality in the job.

Why did you decide to join a management in training programme such as the Ultimate Leader Programme?

I was always looking for a programme that could offer me the necessary exposure to develop and strengthen my leadership skills. The Ultimate Leader Programme really felt the right decision for what I wanted to become. The programme gives you the tools, guidance and challenges needed to become an ultimate leader in the hotel industry.

Why did you choose to work at Dorchester Collection?

Dorchester Collection is a company that you cannot relate to many others. This is a unique company that has very clear what their goals are. It targets a niche market by offering ultra luxury service at its ultra luxury hotels. To be part of such a company is just a one-lifetime opportunity you cannot let go if you want to succeed in the industry. The company clearly is people oriented and believe that their biggest assets are their employees. This is the type of company I wanted to be at and I want to stay at.

What do you enjoy about your role and the programme?

The best feeling of the programme was being able to be helpful at every department you rotated. To have the feeling of people relaying on you to get a job done, just gives you a lot of motivation. The fact of having passed through different departments of one division, really allows you to understand how departments are communicated and also enhance that communication, to make sure everything works perfectly.

What skill have you acquired during the programme that you think will be valuable for your entire career?

I think what this programme has taught me and keeps on teaching me is that there is a solution for everything in this industry. What is really important to understand is that there is always a way to a guest’s heart and always a way for a proper problem recovery and full engagement.

Could you please tell me about your best memory during the programme?

I have a lot of memories about this programme, but what I will always remember and what will stay in your heart are the times guests will tell you “thank you for making my stay unforgettable; you have a great future here” and they actually give you a present because they are truly grateful.

What position do you aspire to secure at the end of the programme? If you have finished the programme, what position did you secure at the end of programme and what do you enjoy about it?

I haven’t finished my programme yet; however I would love to secure a management position either as a leader at the front desk or a guest relations leader. I would love to make sure that every guest understands what this company stands for and that there is no other company that goes above and beyond like we do, to please every guest.

Why did you decide to join a management in training programme such as the Ultimate Leader Programme?

Once I finished the hotel management program with the university, I was eager to join the workforce and apply what I studied and learned in textbooks to real world applications.

Why did you choose to work at Dorchester Collection?

I loved the intimacy of the collection. With just 9 hotels around the globe, the Dorchester Collection was high sought after to be one of the most luxury and innovative hotel groups within the industry, which the idea was strengthened during the time I spent at the hotel.

What do you enjoy about your role and the programme?

The rotation around different departments and the opportunities to engage with guests. The rotation allowed me learn everyone’s names and faces, so I can find familiar faces around the hotel.

What skill have you acquired during the programme that you think will be valuable for your entire career?

During my time as an ULP, I developed a keen sense and awareness of the luxury service. The Do’s and Don’ts to continuously improve our standards.

Could you please tell me about your best memory during the programme?

Being one of the first ULPs at the Beverly Hills Hotel certainly challenged me as an individual and also as an hotelier. While tedious with long hours, I was able to help the team with Guest Profile Accuracy Project in 2017 which ultimately finished the year in a solid 95% accuracy.

What position do you aspire to secure at the end of the programme? If you have finished the programme, what position did you secure at the end of programme and what do you enjoy about it?

I was fortunate enough to run the overnight department as the Night Operations Manager once the program was over. While adopting a vampire-like lifestyle was certainly difficult, but I learned to be more assertive with my decisions and challenged many old routines on the night shift and implemented more efficient ways of competing tasks.
